Here is the script I use on my computers to quickly interact with CVS:
CVS_RSH=ssh exec cvs -d ':ext:rejon at cvs.freedesktop.org:/cvs/clipart'
Try that script.
Can you login to freedesktop.org ?

Generally, when I have these problems taking a two-pronged approach
works best: 1.) ask on the #freedesktop chat channel about this.... 2.)
post a bug
