For the future it would be a good idea to add a report button to report images if they are questionable. Include a small form where people can write down a reason why they report the image. Don't accept reports without reasons. Reported images should be hidden automatically until cleared as public domain. This might be a pain in the ass, but wikimedia commons has shown it is necessary. People have submitted artwork there as public domain and claimed to be the owner when infact they weren't.
