Listmates,

I installed 8.2 on opensuse 10.3 from the opensuse XGL repository to replace
7.6. Compiz works with the nvidia 8600 GT card (512M of GDDR3) on the box, but
the ctrl+alt <- -> switching behavior is really bad.

In 7.6, the ctrl+alt <- -> desktop switching changed desktops crisply with
just the slightest hint of the cube detected during the very short and nice
switch.

In 8.2, the cube hangs fully visible on the desktop for a 1/2 msec or so
before settling into the full screen view of the selected desktop. I have
adjusted all the timings and zooms individually and cannot hit upon a workable
switch like with 7.6. (the defaults worked fine on 7.6)

Additionally, in 7.6 you could basically "spin" the cube with ctrl+alt <- ->
and the spin was smooth and looked perfect. (guessing 1 side each 1/100 of a
second) In 8.2, there is no "spin" just a "ka-chunk" "ka-chunk" as the cube
rotates very slow and awkwardly at (again guessing 1 side each 1/4 second)

Also, when the cube face settles into its full-screen view it isn't very
smooth. It kind-of "wiggles" into place.

Cylinder rotation also suffers extreme slowness. In 7.6, ctrl+alt+button1
rotated the desktop lightning fast even with animated skydome. In 8.2 there is
marked slowness.

For the new install of 8.2, I completely removed my existing ~/.config/compiz
directory (it's saved if I need it again) and let 8.2 create a fresh config
directory. I also upgraded python-GTK as required.

I am stumped concerning what I have messed up with the install. I have put
the configs for both 7.6 and 8.2 up at:

http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/compiz/82issues/compiz-76/
I can look and tell that there are differences, but not being more familiar
with what the individual settings are, I'm shooting in the dark. Anybody see
anything that would explain the differences in behavior? This may be an
openSuSE issue. I have been running 8.2 on Arch Linux for a couple of months
without any of these issues. I don't know if that helps, but I really like the
way 8.2 runs and I would like to solve the issues I am having on opensuse.

What do the compiz gurus suggest I try?
Thanks Sam,

I found a list at community@lists.compiz-fusion.org, is that the correct one
or just another stray? Also FYI, the "Team" link on the compiz site goes to
404. (Now I know the shake-up wasn't that bad...:-) I'll test with blur and
see if the nvidia downclocking "feature" is catching me when I get to the
office.

That seems likely though. On my Arch Linux box where 8.2 works great, I have
an 8800 GT that seems stuck in full-power mode. If I shut the box down and let
it cool for a few hours, then restart, card fan speed is fine for a few hours,
then the fan speed goes back through the roof. Temps are not the problem. CPU
temps never get above 38 deg. C, drive temps are:

05:40 archangel:~> hdtemp
/dev/sda: ST3500630AS: 35?C
/dev/sdc: ST3500630AS: 40?C
/dev/sdb: ST3750330AS: 37?C
/dev/sdd: ST3750330AS: 38?C

GPU temp reports 67 deg C, and case ambient (reported by the nvidia card is at
50 c.) My guess says it looks like an nvidia driver temp reporting issue
there. But there isn't a bit of delay in compiz and glxgears frame rates show
greater than 10K fps.

If on opensuse downclocking *is* the case, "Irony" wins. It will be a case of
(1) With compiz, my card downclocks on opensuse until it is asleep, (2)
without opensuse, it sounds like a jet engine preparing for takeoff. And with
ATI, if downclocking doesn't work, you can fry eggs on my laptop's palm rest.
Go figure... (I wish they would just opensource the drivers so competent
programmers could fix the mess.)

Thanks for your help. You guys keep up the great work. 8.2 is really a fine
piece of code. I can't wait until 9 beta.
