[CREATE] Libre Graphics + Libre Video = ?

Hi all,

I happened to bump into Edward Hervey (of PiTiVi/Collabora fame) a while
back, and we were discussing LGM and the bringing-teams-together and
bringing-users-together dimensions. Turns out they have more or less the
same principles guiding the annual GStreamer Conference, which is set for
October in Prague.

To jump right to the end of the conversation, we thought it would be really
interesting to see if any of the libre graphics community wanted to go, and
perhaps even give talks or set aside some meeting time. Because honestly,
the division we think about between still graphics and motion graphics is
pretty arbitrary -- you just have to look at the number of video-related
talks we get at LGM every year to see that. The long and the short of it
is, it's good to get developers together when they share a common problem
space, and mixed media is here to stay, so all sorts of interesting things
could happen if we don't try and keep our conferences separated.

So here's the opportunity: GStreamer's Conference is October 24 and 25 at
the Clarion Congress hotel in Prague. They'd like to have LGM / libre
graphics people propose some sessions. The "official" CFP window is
actually closed, but program director Christian Schaller is holding open
three or so session slots to try and bring in some graphics talks. You're
all also just invited to come and listen, of course. Christian even said
they might could get extra meeting room space if any project teams wanted to
get together during the event to work -- you'll have to contact him.

Obviously, there's no pressure here. It's just an opportunity. But
GStreamer Conference *is* co-located with the Linux Foundation's Kernel
Summit, so the thought was that some people might already be there and want
to do both. Plus, of course, since LGM was in North America this year,
there might be people who weren't able to get there but could make it to
Prague. And why wait until May, anyhow -- just like the various Libre
Graphics Day mini-events, there's a good opportunity to meet face to face
with people from the video side of the "fence" and to talk to users. After
all, there are doubtless a lot of video artists who use the still graphics
tools to tackle important parts of their workflow, and you could get
valuable insight into the problems they face during this event. And who
knows, there could also be people there who are working primarily in video
media, but just happen to not have heard of Krita, or hadn't thought to try
MyPaint or Inkscape as part of their process.

If you're interested in participating, there is more information about the
GStreamer Conf itself at http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/conference/ .
Including hotel info and links to the Kernel Summit site. If you think
you'd like to propose a talk for one of the reserved slots, then contact
Christian, at christian.schaller at collabora.co.uk . I know the video talks
at LGM are always fun to see; I think that graphics talks at GStreamer Conf
would be fun to see, too. Hope you'll all consider submitting a talk, as
well as just joining everyone else for the excitement in Prague!

Thanks,
Nate
