Hi everyone, I'd like to suggest a topic for a panel discussion session at LGM -- Open Source Graphics and the Web App. Jon Phillips touched on this topic in his talk last year in Montreal; I'm interested in asking some specific questions that relate to how the FOSS graphics suite can or should react to the RIA movement (which is mostly non-free). In addition to Picnik and the other well-known services, Google Docs just added a Drawing app, so it isn't going away. Specifically, some of the key points I think there could be good discussion on are: * Are the open source RIA frameworks good enough to facilitate building open source graphics Web apps? If not, what do they lack? * Should open source projects pursue writing a web front-end in parallel to their existing desktop code. or is it best left to new/different projects? * Can hosted services based on open source graphics code be used to generate funding for the projects involved? * Can hosted services based on open source graphics be used to attract new users to the desktop application suite, or, arguably more importantly, attract new developers? * Is there any "low hanging fruit" or project spaces currently unserved by the closed-source hosted services that would be ripe for a motivated open source project to pursue? So I'd really like to know if anyone would be interested in participating in such a panel. I'm only proposing that I'd moderate the session; I may have one or two points to chime in on but the idea is to let the developer crowd talk. Similarly, does anyone have any related questions that it would be good to debate at the meeting? I know it's a little out there, probably more about open questions than about providing answers, but I think the discussion could be really good. I definitely know there are some interesting things in the "currently unserved" space, and I'm real curious what consensus is on the frameworks and on the financial theories.
