This probably just means DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS env variable is not
set (this variable is analogous to DISPLAY for X). It sounds like you
want the system bus anyway, so try dbus-monitor --system (as root)

You can try turning on verbose logging perhaps. I'm not sure of the
step-by-step instructions for doing that on your setup though.
