Even hardware-related stuff should often be approached per-session. 
ConsoleKit is going in that direction for a reason with the upcoming 
Multi-Seat support. Both for multiple directly attached seats and for 
thin client dynamic seats, the user-machine approach may well be 
insufficient.

The ability for cron-like services or ssh-like secondary logins to join 
an existing session for a user is useful, but should be an explicit 
action rather than be fully automatic.
