I think the difference between the screenshots is mostly because Windows 98
doesn't properly support Unicode, so to display Cyrillic it needs a font that
is specifically encoded for Cyrillic (and you'll need different fonts for each
script then). Now everything is just Unicode which is just much better on so
many levels, so maybe it's time to upgrade your Windows after 10 years :-)

About the console problem, I think our fonts follow the specs on that page, but
I guess Windows 98 has additional requirements... Make sure to install the
latest version of DejaVu since we did have some issues with Mono getting
recognized as monospaced a long time ago.
