just compared gstreamers (recent BRANCH-GSTREAMER-0_8 checkout) and mplayers cpu
load with top.

gst-launch filesrc location=test1-v101a102.ts ! ts2ps apid=102 vpid=101 !
mpegdemux name=demux { demux.video_04 ! queue ! mpeg2dec ! xvimagesink }
demux.audio_00 ! { queue ! mad ! alsasink }

-> ~8.5 cpu usage

mplayer test1-v101a102.ts

-> ~6.9 cpu usage

So gstreamer is not as slick as mplayer but no big difference here.
