 * what type of file are you trying to play? (avi/mpeg/quicktime/etc.)

 * do you get the error right at the beginning or when you do something like
seeking?

If you know to run totem from the command line (gnome-terminal), could you run
it like this

  % GST_DEBUG=totem:5,*:3  totem /home/joe/somefile.ext  2>&1 | gzip >
dbg.log.gz

and attach the file?
