Apologies if I was a bit harsh, didn't mean to be rude.

There are at least two things we need in order to get to the bottom of this
problem:

 (1) the type of file you were trying to play. What is the full name of the
file?

 (2) the file that the command line I have you above produces. Maybe you could
     try this again on a command line (note that there is a comma after the 5):

       $ export GST_DEBUG=totem:5,*:3

     and then

       $ totem /home/joe/somefile.ext  2>&1 | gzip > dbg.log.gz

     There isn't really an easier way to get this information I'm afraid.
