ok, interesting results with 'device' it seems that apart from 'front' I am not
able to write to any of the other virtual devices (like side, rear,
surround51), so it seems alsa is actually might be aware that I do not have a
surround sound enabled card after all.

Writing to 'default' gives me the normal behavious of only a two of the 6
channels actually played in my headphones. Writing to 'dmix' also gives me the
correct stereo mixing.

Used this pipeline for testing:
gst-launch-0.10 -v filesrc location=Dust_to_Glory_720.wmv ! fluasfdemux !
fluwmadec ! audioconvert ! alsasink device=surround51
