add some unit tests for unpositioned channel conversion

Unit test seems to pass, but haven't done a lot of testing of these patches
with multichannel positioned audio yet. I'm fairly sure there are still some
kinks that need to be ironed out (I've seen an assertion warning somewhere at
least).
