add preset interface

* fix some spelling errors in comment
* more efficient version parsing
* make value in set_meta const

next is to turn ::create_preset() into either:
* ::randomize() and also add ::reset()
* or add configure(mode), where mode can be DEFAULT|RANDOM and ev. MIN|MAX
  is min/max useful?
