I think this is a weird interaction between various libraries. In my case I
couldn't reproduce without all of the following:

*) x86_64
*) glibc 2.10.1
*) MALLOC_CHECK_ enabled (i.e. set to one of 0,1,2,3)
*) Using glib applications (including KDE ones since Qt uses glib)
*) With kde 4 libraries. (Running under a KDE desktop or simply being a KDE
application)

I personally suspect a rare glibc bug but I've not been able to track it down
to anything useful and there's no way I'm tromping through glibc malloc source.
I do know that disabling MALLOC_CHECK_ by unsetting it stops the crashes,
whereas having it enabled either causes SIGABRT or SIGSEGV over time, depending
on the value of MALLOC_CHECK_.
