Aha.  In MacPorts, python -c "import sys; print sys.exec_prefix" gives me:
/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6

but "libpython2.6.dylib" is in /opt/local/lib.  This must be one of the many
fragile aspects of MacPorts' strategy for installing multiple Python versions.

Any suggestions?
