Well, I think changing defaults in cases like this is sort-of acceptable as
long as the change doesn't have "dramatic" consequences, especially when it can
be argued that the current defaults have either not been chosen with anything
in mind, or don't make sense, or aren't particularly good. We've certainly done
it with other encoders before (e.g. theora IIRC where we changed the default
quality or somesuch).
