I have another patch for improving the defaults but I will submit that in a
separate ticket.

I need to go through and test all the options again - I should be able to do
that today.

The patch may need splitting into separate patches for addition of the new
properties and re-working the code to construct and apply defaults and user-set
properties in the correct order. I don't have much confidence that this will
look any cleaner in the history, but if desired, I will do it. Please mention
if you would like to see any further splitting as well.
