That would explain the above failures then I guess.

This is essentially a packaging issue, take it up with your distro please.

You need to install gst-plugins-good (or whatever package your distro put
v4l2src in).

Feel free to file separate bugs against cheese and/or ekiga. They should handle
this case properly and show you a proper error dialog.
