My understanding is that these commits did actually fix some issues for other
people, and they also seem like the right thing to do to me, so I'm reluctant
to just revert them.

I would first like to understand what's going on here.

The twitter post you mentioned refers to a pastebinned log that contains this
at the end:
arch:
/Users/davidnielsen/Projekter/bockbuild/profiles/banshee/build-root/_install/libexec/gstreamer-0.10/gst-plugin-scanner
isn't executable

Maybe this is just a packaging issue? Or maybe this issue always existed, but
the error handling (fallback to scanning in the main program instead of using
an external plugin scanner) doesn't work?

A full GST_DEBUG=*:5 log might be useful.
