This doesn't make much sense though, unless there's special GIO API that makes
stuff work with SMB :)

giosrc only gets a GInputStream from the GFile and then uses
g_input_stream_read() and g_seekable_seek() on it. Can you think of any reason
why it would work with the FUSE module, that probably uses exactly the same
API, but not in giosrc?
