If it is too small, decodebin2 will finish preroll before having seen data on
all the pads - if there was indeed data to be coming in.

Subtitles *should* be OK, as this is using the normal decodebin2 behavior, and
AFAIK there's no such issue with it. However, I'm nowhere near acquainted
enough with decodebin2 to say that with any assurance.
