Add a force-ipv4 option

Could we add this patch to at least enable the user to force the use of an ipv4
socket? This could also come in handy in other cases.

Trying to decide whether to use an ipv4 or ipv6 based on the host specified
might break some existing code. This patch should be safe to introduce.
