I believe one of the GStreamer developers/maintainers indicated in a previous
comment to this bug report that the default behavior if 'sync' is not
explicitly set to something is 'sync=true'.  We know at least with JACK (which
sits on top of ALSA) that it is possible to survive an underrun.
