The first one just prints some debug output to stdout, the second includes your
fix (not completely though, it uses 0 instead of DISCARD as DISCARD seems
semantically wrong here) and also prints some debug output.

I would like to see that debug output for both versions as that will hopefully
allow to understand what exactly the problem here is, and also I would like to
know if the second fixes the problem.
