Let's re-open this for the time being, since I think we still need to do
something.

As long as we purport to support automake 1.11.3 we should make sure stuff
works with it too.

But perhaps it's time to bump the automake requirement a little :)

Ubuntu 12.04 still has 1.11, but 14.04 has 1.14. 12.04 is not a supported dev
target (to build gstreamer from git out of the box).

Debian stable still has 1.11, but new stable is about to be released in about
two weeks with 1.14, so by the time we release 1.6 Debian stable will have
1.14.

RHEL 6.5 has 1.11 out of the box it seems (there's probably an update repo with
newer versions somewhere), but I also wouldn't regard it as a support dev
target (to build gstreamer from git out of the box).

RHEL 7 has automake 1.13.
