Ok, so I have subsurfaces somewhat working with Gtk+.  The snag is that it
seems to require some kind of intervention from the application to either tell
us where to place the subsurface or manually create a GtkDrawingArea backed by
a subsurface.  The former is implemented in the patch by Julien above, the
latter would look something like
