Thanks, that did the trick-- had to set $ACLOCAL_FLAGS to 
"-I /usr/local/share/libtool/libltdl"

FWIW, I have a very ordinary installation of Red Hat 6.0 (or so I
thought--not much has changed since the original installation).  However,
I'm still having similar problems with other packages, so I suspect either
I have the wrong version of libtool (1.3.4, dated 12/7/99) or it's not
installed correctly.  Guess I'll keep looking..
