The MIPS code is in my copy here, and I'm compiling to test other changes
I made before committing.  Should be in CVS in minutes.

No, actually, performance has nothing to do with it.  There simply is no
way to code what this is doing in C, without really nasty tricks.  These
tricks are available in GNU Pth, but have to be somewhat understood and
extracted from the rest of Pth.  I don't see any way to use libpth as a
unit, unfortunately.

This is planned, but someone has to sit down and figure out Pth first ;-(
