[gst-devel] meaning of "offset"

Quick question:

what does the offset of a buffer mean?

I'm guessing that it's the offset in a file that data came from.  Or
perhaps its the number of bytes processed so far.

The particular case I'm looking at is stereo2mono: should it pass the
offset of buffers through unchanged, or should it divide it by 2, or
something else?

I'm going with unchanged, but I'd love to know what it's actually meant
to represent. ;-)
