I just compiled a later version of gst-player and I noticed something:

Even though I launch it with:
~> /opt/gnome/bin/gst-player --disable-sound

I get errors like this when I load an avi.
~
audio_alsa: no cards found!
audio_alsa: no cards found!

** (gst-player:7075): CRITICAL **: file esdsink.c: line 362
(gst_esdsink_open_audio): assertion `sink->fd == -1' failed

** (gst-player:7075): CRITICAL **: file esdsink.c: line 362
(gst_esdsink_open_audio): assertion `sink->fd == -1' failed
audio_queue: waiting for the app to restart source pad elements
~

And there is no video...

There was no ./configure "--disable-(audio|sound)" option or I would
have tried that.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Jeff
