[gst-devel] no elements or plugins work

As I mentioned on IRC yesterday this is not correct. My user registry is
empty and Totem, Rhythmbox etc works fine for me. Everything goes into
/var/cache (as it always have). Only way I can think of the situation
you describe (where some stuff going into .gstreamer under /root) here
arising is maybe if you have a root user registry first, then create the
system registry.
