You sure you don't want this in ALSA directly? I'm not too familiar with
the topic, but I believe that is the right way to go. (I assume this is
for bluetooth headphones or the like.)

Yup, was one of the design goals. But it could be in this case you're
looking too high in the stack.

(Disclaimer: I know nothing about the topic except what you mentioned in
