[gst-devel] jhbuild and GStreamer

Hello everyone,

just a heads-up - jhbuild can now build both GStreamer 0.8 and 0.10
modules. At this moment, both gnome-media and totem are built against
0.10 by default, so that we can get some feedback from the brave front
runners.

You can easily override this choice locally if you want:
- change autogen args for totem to "--enable-gstreamer=0.8"
- change branch for gnome-media to "HEAD"

If you want to make sure you can play patent-encumbered format files,
you can manually tell jhbuild to build the -ugly and -ffmpeg packages:
  jhbuild buildone gst-plugins-ugly-0.10
  jhbuild buildone gst-ffmpeg-0.10

gst-register does not exist anymore, the next time your applications
start up the new plugins will automatically be used.

It's not decided yet if gnome modules will depend on GStreamer 0.8 or
0.10 for Monday's release. In practice, only 0.10 is actively
maintained, given that it's the latest stable version; however, some
work is still left to be added to the 0.10 stack, including porting of
some elements for proprietary formats, an implementation of sparse data
streams (for subtitles) and DVD support.

If you care about the choice, feel free to discuss it. And please file
bugs on gnome-media and totem if you're testing it with the 0.10
back-end so we can work on them.

Thanks,
Thomas
