Totem, VDPAU and autoplugging

Is there a way to make totem use VDPAU? I've seen a few references on
this list to autoplugging (and setting the priority of a plugin?) but I
can't find the documentation for that.

Additionally, when writing a video playing application, how does one
find the "best" plugins on the fly to handle a particular stream or file
and to use as a video sink embedded in a window controlled by the app?
