It sounds more like a firewall issue. The only way that this could work without having to unblock ports is to use a port the you already know to be open. Is having the clients open up the ports really a problem. This is the whole idea behind firewalling. Block out everything except the ports that you need open but if you need a port you should be able to use it. If the people that are using your client are concerned that this would be a security risk just ensure them that your app does not have any whole (once  you have made sure that this is true of course).
