Good point. It might also be useful for e.g. fstab-sync at some point.

Yup, it does.

Looks good to commit with a ChangeLog entry and a patch to the
doc/spec/hal-spec.xml.in file explaining volume.fssubtype and the values
it can presently assume :-)
