freeze on Dell Inspiron 700m

Steve,

Can you do the following?

1) don't start eth0
2) switch to a console and log in as root
3) /usr/sbin/hald --daemon=no
4) See if a panic appears on the console

If you're in X, you'll never see the panic because you're not on a
console.
