I went through that mail and from it i seem to learn that hdparm only works 
with IDE drives. I have a SATA drive in my laptop. Could that be the issue?

I initiated a heavy disk read that lasted several seconds with the 
command 'updatedb' and simultaneously monitored the disk state with hdparm. 
I through the read responded 'standby'?

$ sudo hdparm -C /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 drive state is:  standby
