What about generic support for backlight control via sysfs? E.g. I now
(2.6.20-rc3) have

{pts/0}% LC_ALL=C ll /sys/class/backlight/toshiba
total 0
- -r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Jan  4 11:28 actual_brightness
- -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Jan  4 11:28 brightness
- -r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Jan  4 11:28 max_brightness
- -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4096 Jan  4 11:28 power
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    0 Jan  4 11:16
subsystem -> ../../../class/backlight/
- --w------- 1 root root 4096 Jan  4 11:28 uevent
{pts/0}% cat /sys/class/backlight/toshiba/actual_brightness
7
{pts/0}% cat /sys/class/backlight/toshiba/max_brightness
7

Does HAL support it (not as far as I can tell)? May be it makes sense to
integrate Dell in existing kernel framework?
