Backlight level changes not working after suspend

I've noticed recently that changes to the backlight level work via the
laptop shortcut keys upon initial startup, after the system has been
suspended and then resumed, the shortcut keys are still detected but
there's no change to the backlight.

Does this sound like a HAL problem, or a kernel problem or...?

The laptop is a Sony Vaio SZ1XP.
