So you're actually advocating running X mode restoration in parallel to
VBIOS mode restoration? Awesome.

Never mind that your VBIOS hanging points to far deeper problems.  Or
that this will actually hang on newer hardware due to having a cheap
hardware 'lock'.  Or that this will actually hang quite often due to
restoration needing to happen in an excruciatingly specific order.
