hal vs acpid

Hello,

I compiled 2.6.25-rc7 without legacy support for acpi.  This of course will break acpid since it can't open /proc/acpi/event.  Not a problem HAL should take over.  I reboot with 2.6.25-rc7, acpid gives error, HAL starts, I login, I press the power button and nothing happens.  In acpid if I press the power button the system shuts down.  I am using Slackware 12, hal-0.5.9.1-i486-1, and hal-info-20070618-noarch-1.

What do I need to do to get HAL to do what acpid used to?
