I'm assuming this is for kde4 trunk, so...

Any chance of a quasi-official kde patch for 3.5.x (something that
distributions could apply for 3.5.10 packages)?

I'm working with someone else to try and get this done for xfce 4.6
(but running out of time).  Assuming hal-0.5.12 releases relatively
soon, it would be nice to be able to support this fully in both kde and
xfce.
