If nobody comments on the patch, I guess we should just commit it and
see if it breaks other things. Let me know.

Honestly, all that stuff should just be ripped out. I hope the "put
abstractions on top of abstractions of abstractions" contest is over
now, and people stop putting stuff like this into the system. :)
