It seems that if I visit www.google.com/chrome using the first tab on Chrome, everything is fine. Tonight I needed to download Chrome for another computer and I visited that page at a moment when several other apps and seven other tabs were already open on Chrome, thus creating an eighth tab. That caused an immediate GPU crash and the screen went off again. This has become very annoying.
