Does the adapter work for you through BIOS? I.e. do you see stuff on screen before the kernel loads? If yes, you could prevent the i915 driver from loading (to make sure it doesn't mess with the registers), boot to console, and run intel_reg_dumper from the intel-gpu-tools [2] package.
