boot, check E-mail in X11, go back go console, shut monitor off, wait...

OK, the issue seems to be narrowed down to the powerdown section.  The
Slackware /etc/rc.d/rc.M has this in it:

/bin/setterm -blank 15 -powersave powerdown -powerdown 60

Perhaps this isn't the best setting on my part, to power down a monitor that is
already off at the time the code is executed?

Anyway, perhaps X11 doesn't leave the monitor in the best state to be shut off.
The lockdep you see is from me mounting an F2FS-formatted USB stick in order
to do a slow download.  The dmesg timestamp of 27862.877640 is from me turning
on the monitor the next morning, then hitting the Alt key.

Thanks!
