thank you for confirming that this is a unity issue. I will now try to
propagate this info to the unity developers. Would be glad if you could provide
a couple more details for the unity developers, assuming that they are willing
to help.
1) Any clue why things mostly work when manually starting things with
xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --above LVDS1
and do not work when unity auto-configures the external monitor or one manually
configures it with
xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --left-of LVDS1
that is approximately equivalent to what unity seems to be doing?
2) Any clue why when unity/compiz are doing autoconfigure the external monitor
I get
intel_do_flush_locked fail no space left on device</pre>
