This patch is gold!
I can confirm that the suggested patch solves the problem with the external
screen not starting correctly on boot or resume from sleep on a Dell Latitude
E7440 + E-Dock. Currently running a drm-intel 3.13.0-rc8 kernel on Fedora 20
with the proposed patch and the external screen now starts as it should. I no
longer have a problem where a kworker process eats CPU for about 5 minutes
until the screen is detected making the computer more or less unusable during
that time, and repeatedly writes out "failed to train dp aborting" in dmesg, so
a massive improvement.
Only remaining problem is to sort out issues with washed out colors on the
external monitor in Gnome (which existed before I applied this patch as well).
Thanks for this one.
